La nuova frontiera dei tessuti elettronici

The new frontier of electronic fabrics

For those who have never heard of them, electronic fabrics are the real revolution of the moment . In a society always attentive to innovation , clothing seems to be the new challenge through which to bring novelty and change to a constantly evolving society . And in fact these new materials are slowly becoming reality.

Electronic textiles, also known as smart textiles , are materials that contain electronic components . The technology is typically embedded in conductive fibers and can be used in conjunction with other fabric-related software . It seems like something out of a science fiction film, but it is instead an already quite widespread reality, as it provides a glimpse into an already current future. Technology is in fact increasingly present in our lives and is now also becoming present in the clothing we wear every day .

There are two main classifications of electronic fabrics: active and passive.

Passive fabrics are those capable of interpreting external environmental conditions via sensors and provide different types of protection to the wearer . UV protective clothing is one example.

Active fabrics , on the other hand, contain both sensors and actuators and can regulate temperature , resist water , absorb steam and accumulate heat . In essence, active fabrics help clothing maintain its appearance and condition, while protecting the wearer.

Many of the electronic fabrics currently on the market are cable-free , so no worries. The sensors are so small and integrated that they can barely be seen and are able to detect even the smallest body movements. There are stretch sensors , pressure sensors , and tilt sensors .

These sensors are flexible and created with the goal of being used on the move. This is to guarantee a comfortable garment that moves with the person. And in this way these sensors can work on any function without interfering with our steps.

Different fabrics are made to withstand harsh weather and extreme heat. Those resistant to water, fire and wind typically consist of both sensors and actuators. They can also be very economical as the materials used are simple circuits.

The applications are now very disparate. A Brooklyn company, Loomia , recently launched a jacket that contains a wire-free circuit that can retain heat . But sportswear brands are, perhaps, the biggest supporters of e-textiles . One company in particular, Wearable X , has launched a line of yoga clothing with integrated technology that provides real-time feedback on poses to hold via apps and vibration sensors.

But high technology also goes hand in hand with high fashion . CuteCircuit wants to amplify the bodily senses through clothing and augmented reality , solar energy and other technological means. Some items in the current collection are a mirrored handbag that can display social posts and a women's dress that changes color based on the rhythm of your breathing .

But how to interpret all this from a future perspective? These textile innovations make us understand first of all that our clothing in the future will be more than a simple representation of our personal style: it will in fact have many more functions. It will protect, support and improve our lives . In other words, our wardrobe will become increasingly integrated into our daily lives and wearing smart fabrics will make daily activities even simpler.

Imagine this: one day our clothes will offer the ability to update us on important matters without the need to have a phone in hand and will be able to warm or cool us at the touch of a button. In addition to these functions, they will also be able to alleviate ailments and diagnose diseases .

Some say the technology is moving too fast, others say it's not moving enough. Whatever the opinion, there is no denying that technology is increasingly part of our lives . So it's no surprise if the interaction starts to also affect the way we dress. On the other hand, even at CasaGIN we believe, in a certain sense, that clothing should transfer a sort of energy, obviously positive. And if this is done in an eco-sustainable way then the advantage can be twofold , for man and for the environment
